We were notified that scammers have been calling utility customers and advising them that if they don't make an immediate payment through a pre-paid debit card, their services will be disconnected.  The scammers provided a phone number for the customer to call once the debit card was purchased, (866) 438-02421.  (NOTE:  This is one of several numbers the scammers appear to be using.)  When called, a voice recording states that you've called the "Disconnection Department" and to leave a message and phone number and they will call you back.  (As of today, the number just rings.)

This is a very common utilities scam and no utility company would ever demand this.  When in doubt about a call or demand, hang up and call the Customer Service Center for your particular Utility Company and confirm the legitimacy of the call before ever purchasing/providing a pre-paid debit card #."

My wife called back for some shitz and giggles and played around with the operator pretending to be dumb. They said they needed to reset her computer key and she needed to send $100,  so she said she didn't know where to put a key is it like a car key? And they kept trying to explain themselves and she kept acting like she didn't know how to do what they were asking. She finally said she had an iTunes card and they told her to get the money from iTunes in a new card and send it to them. When she said " oh are you going to listen to some music?" the man said, "You M**F** why are you wasting my time? She repeated what he said, acredit upset and said she was going to call his boss! It was fun

Voice mail in broken english (robot) that the Microsoft Key had stopped renewing. It's a scam, as that never happens. Don't fall for it.
Block the number and send the information to the FCC.

I got the "Microsoft license key" phone call at 6:15AM!  We normally don't answer these calls--thank you, caller ID--but when the phone rings at that hour we pick up and then wake up.  Oh well.   The robotic Hal-like voice is very odd.

I, too, got the call from 866-438-042 warning that my Microsoft license has expired and to call 866-978-7722 to resolve the problem.   It is that call that prompted me to come here and report it.  Needless, to see I blocked the number.

    PHONEY MICROSOFT SCAM
Call from 866-438-0242 Tues Jan 17th @3.26PM Eastern - 42 second pre recorded message in synthesized voice.

Absolutely NOT MICROSOFT, DO NOT talk with them. They're a scam artist.

Remember. Microsoft doesn't call home users

What's the scam? They call out of the blue to tell you your licence key is expired, tell you they're Microsoft / or an authorised partner, get you to allow them to remotely access / control your PC, sell you a bunch of baloney about your PC being compromised and / or install malware to extort even more out of you. This is real scum bag stuff - aimed at duping and extorting the less tech savvy people and old age pensioners etc. If you let them in, you may as well hand them your credit card.

received a call from this number claiming to be from Microsoft, telling me that my Microsoft Windows License Key is expired and that I need to purchase a new product key in order to reactivate my Windows operating system on my computer. The robotic message told me to call an 866 number (which I didn't bother to write down because I knew it was a scam) and talk to a representative to purchase a new license product key. I've posted on my Facebook to my friends and family about the phone call, to not fall for it, and to let others know about it. I know for a fact that Microsoft will never "cold call" anyone who uses Microsoft products. If your computer is having problems, then it is UP TO YOU to contact Microsoft YOURSELF to remedy the situation.
